EC Awaits Ejisu Vacancy Notification
Wed, 13 Mar 2024 13:00
Director of Electoral Services of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Quaicoe Serebour, has said that they await notification from Parliament about the vacancy created by the death of the Ejisu Constituency MP, Dr. John Kumah.
The disclosure comes on the heels of questions about the by-election which should, in line with the constitution, be held to fill the gap left by the deceased MP.
According to the Director, “the 1992 Constitution forbids the holding of by-elections three months prior to general elections. If you look at Article 112 as amended, we won’t hold a by-election if a vacancy occurs fewer than three months before general elections. However, the Commission must schedule a by-election if it endures more than three months.”
Continuing, he said that the commission has not yet received any notification from Parliament about the creation of a vacancy following the passing of the MP for the Ejisu Constituency as required by the constitution. He added that Parliament has seven days within which to notify the commission when a vacancy is created.
