Kennedy Agyapong, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, had reason to confront the Minority Leader, Cassiel Ato Forson in a parliamentary session on Wednesday, May 22, 2024.
The encounter was over Forson's claim regarding the current exchange rate of the Ghanaian cedi to the US dollar.
Ato Forson asserted in Parliament that the exchange rate was 15.30 cedis to the dollar.
Agyapong challenged Forson's assertion, arguing that the claimed rate was inaccurate.
He emphasized that the current rate was not 15.3 cedis to the dollar and further criticized the Minority for what he described as misinformation.
"Today, the exchange rate is not 15.3%. Again, the food inflation is not 48, but we didn’t say anything," Agyapong stated.
He also expressed frustration over the disruptive behaviour of the opposition in Parliament, suggesting that if the Minority continues with such conduct, the Majority could reciprocate.
"The moment he gets on his feet then everybody is speaking from the other sidehellip; so Mr. Speaker, what they are doing is becoming too much. We can also get up and scream at them, what will be the results we are going to get out from that?"
"So, my honourable members, with all due respect, you don't have the license to scream and think nobody has the license to respond. We can also respond accordingly, but what would be the fate of the House?" he said.
In response, Ato Forson defended his statement, asserting the accuracy of his figures.
"Mr. Speaker, I check my facts anytime I speak. Mr. Speaker, I am a man of numbers and I don't joke with my numbers.
"Before I spoke, I sent a message to someone who operates a forex bureau and I have the evidence here. He said one dollar is 15 cedis 30 pesewas."
