The ruling New Patriotic Party’s National Executive Council is set to decide on the choice of a running mate of the flag bearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, today, July 4, 2024.
The meeting which is expected to be held at the Alisa Hotel in Accra is expected to see Dr. Bawumia, defending his choice of running mate to the National Executive Council and the National Council of the NPP.
In an interview on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' morning show, the National Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, stated that, the choice made by the vice president is the best of the choices amongst the options that were available to him [Dr. Bawumia]
Nana B explained that, the tenets of the NPP’s constitution demanded that, the Vice President presents his choice of running mate to the National Executive Council for the final commiseration to be made before the big announcement is made.
Nana B said, “In our party’s constitution, Article 13 is quite clear that whoever the nominee is, whoever you intend to present as a running mate, you must do so in consultation with the National Council. So he [Bawumia] is presenting before the National Council the MP for Manhyia South and Minister for Energy, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh [as his running mate].”
The Manyhia South MP’s nomination has sparked mixed reactions both within and outside the party. While others are praising the choice, there has also been vehement opposition against the choice.
Meanwhile, the majority leader of Ghana’s Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has warned against any slanderous comment against the Manhyia South MP as it may have a dire consequence on the political fortunes of the party.Kobina Darlington/
