The Director General of the National Lottery Authority and parliamentary candidate for Akuapim North, Sammi Awuku has cut sod on Thursday, July 25, 2024 for the reconstruction of Mampong Coronation Park.
The facility will have a FIFA-standard football pitch and also sit 400 spectators as well as VIP sections for dignitaries.
Additionally, it will have dressing rooms for the teams plus 4 floodlights to facilitate night games.
The estimated cost for the project is GHC 4 million with completion timeline of three months.
Sammy Awuku told the press in an interview that the reconstruction is in response to a request from the traditional leaders for a contemporary pitch and recreational facilities for the Mampong community.
Historically, the Mampong and Sunyani Coronation Parks are among the only football pitches built by Ghana's first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, in the district capitals to promote soccer activities.
According to the Okyeame of Mampong, the Mampong Coronation Park served as a training ground for the Black Stars and was the last pitch they used before winning the African Cup of Nations in 1982.
Sammi Awuku urged the contractor to adhere to the project schedule.
