Kofi Abrefa Afena, Press Aide to NPP Vice-Presidential Candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has strongly refuted a recent news report alleging that Dr. Prempeh made discriminatory comments against the Ga and Ewe ethnic groups.
The report, circulating widely online, claims that Dr. Prempeh said "Gas and Ewes are Ghana’s problem; historically they shouldn’t have been part of Ghana”.
Mr. Afena denounced the report as "maliciously false and a desperate attempt to stoke ethnic divisions”.
In a statement issued on Monday, Mr. Afena categorically denied that Dr. Opoku Prempeh made such comments, describing the report as "a fabrication with no basis in reality”.
He stressed; "Dr. Prempeh has always respected the rich diversity of Ghana’s ethnic groups and has been a consistent advocate for unity and development across all Regions. This report is nothing more than a baseless attempt to tarnish his image and undermine his commitment to serving every Ghanaian regardless of ethnicity."
According to Mr. Afena, Dr. Prempeh’s record in public service speaks for itself stating “as Minister of Education, he worked tirelessly to implement the Free Senior High School policy, ensuring that students from every ethnic background across the nation have access to quality education. He has always believed in inclusivity and equal chance for all Ghanaians”.
The Press Aide urged the public to disregard the false report and not allow divisive rumors to influence the nation’s political discourse.
He also appealed to the media to sustain the highest standards of integrity by verifying information before publication, especially on sensitive issues that could stoke divisions.
Mr. Afena reiterated that Dr. Opoku Prempeh, affectionately called NAPO, remains committed to promoting a united Ghana and working towards development and prosperity of all citizens.
"The Vice Presidential Candidate’s focus is on policies that improve lives, not on engaging in or endorsing divisive rhetoric”, he affirmed.
This statement follows growing concerns about the spread of misinformation as the 2024 elections approach.
Mr. Afena called on Ghanaians to remain vigilant and fact-check all news reports, especially those with ethnic sentiments, to protect Ghana’s peace and unity.
