Ghana’s head coach Otto Addo has acknowledged the test his team faces as they prepare to clash with Angola in their fifth match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Speaking after the team’s final training session in Luanda, Addo emphasized that the already-qualified Angolan side would be no less formidable despite their secured spot in the tournament.
The Black Stars, yet to secure their first win in the campaign, will face Pedro Gonccedil;alves' Palancas Negras at the Estaacute;dio 11 de Novembro on Friday. With Ghana’s qualification hopes still in the balance, the stakes are high for the visitors.
Discussing the test ahead, Addo dismissed any notion that Angola might ease off, given their qualification status.
“These are challenging games. You can’t take it for granted that they will play at 50 per cent,” he told the Ghana FA’s media team. “I know Angola will be 100 per cent ready. It’s going to be challenging. It’s an away game, and it’s going to be very tight. But mentally, the boys are ready.”
He highlighted the significance of the match, calling it an chance for the Black Stars to ignite their qualification campaign.
“It’s time for our first victory in this competition. I think it’s a great chance to keep our chances alive,” he added.
Despite battling several injuries within the squad, Addo praised the team’s mentality and the integration of new players, noting their readiness to step up.
“The atmosphere is really good,” he said. “The new players have adapted well and have shown in training that they understand our playing philosophy. It’s a big test, but I’m confident they’ll deliver.”
With just two games remaining in the qualifiers, Ghana sits under pressure to secure maximum points to improve their standing in the group. A win against Angola would not only boost morale but also enhance their chances of booking a ticket to Morocco next year.
The Black Stars will be looking to channel their resilience and tactical discipline as they aim to overcome the Angolans in what promises to be a fiercely contested encounter.
