Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has commended NPP flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his decision to empower traditional rulers under his Presidency.
Dr. Bawumia has promised to amend the Chieftaincy Act to grant Chiefs more powers to participate in the governance system both at local level and within government.
The proposal has been well received across the country.
Addressing Ghanaians on a wide-range of issues, President Kufuor stressed this proposal will be extremely advantageous to the Chieftaincy institution.
"It is laudable and a good proposalhellip;I don't know if you have observed that now, from the coast to North East to West, our Chiefs and Queen mothers are well educated knowledgeable."
"I am a politician and I am not afraid to say that currently, Ghanaians are suspicious of politicians. They assume politicians are corrupt but they have enormous respect for our traditional leaders. Our Chiefs command so much respect.”
"In Accra, the Chiefs command respect and so is the situation through the Akan areas whether Akropong, Asante, Akyem, Akwamu, Kwahu; look at how people respect the Chiefs. Go to Bono to Gonja, Dagomba, Wa, Western, etc the people respect the traditional rulers."
President Kufuor added that Dr. Bawumia has shown he understands the nation's value system and believes he can get a lot of things done through the Chiefs.
"So, if Bawumia is saying that he will empower the Chiefs and involve them in governance, it is laudable. After all as a politician, you are a servant leader. You're here to serve, so it is significant to understand and appreciate the value system of the country you want to serve and that is it."
"If through the Chiefs, you'll get the people to understand what you want to do for them for the country to move forward, that is something very good."
