Crackdown On Non compliant Mattress Manufacturers GSA Takes Action To Protect Environment

The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has launched an intensive crackdown on mattress manufacturers using polystyrene, a material posing serious environmental threats due to its contribution to microplastic pollution.

As polystyrene breaks down, it releases microplastics that can persist in the environment for centuries, contaminating water sources, harming wildlife, and ultimately entering the human food chain.

The GSA has raised concerns about the far-reaching impacts of this material, not only on the ecosystem but also on public health.

From a health perspective, polystyrene in mattresses is particularly concerning. It emits volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can severely degrade indoor air quality.

Prolonged exposure to VOCs is linked to respiratory problems, headaches, skin irritation, and even potential neurological effects. For individuals with pre-existing conditions such as asthma or allergies, the risks are heightened.

Furthermore, the high flammability of polystyrene increases fire hazards. Fires involving polystyrene release toxic fumes, including styrene gas, which is classified as a possible human carcinogen.

Under the Ghana Standards Authority Act, 2022, the GSA has started enforcing stricter regulations to halt the activities of manufacturers that violate standards by using polystyrene. This enforcement may include significant fines, product recalls, and other legal consequences for manufacturers failing to comply with environmental and safety standards.

The GSA’s actions are part of a broader commitment to promoting sustainable manufacturing practices that align with global environmental goals, reducing the influx of detrimental materials into the Ghanaian market.

Beyond enforcement, the GSA is collaborating with key stakeholders, including environmental agencies and industry experts, to address the issue of microplastic pollution on a larger scale.

The authority is working on initiatives to provide long-term solutions, such as developing eco-friendly manufacturing alternatives and fostering industry-wide awareness of sustainable materials.
