NPP presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumja says former President John Mahama has shown an insensitive attitude towards poor families in the country.
Addressing supporters in the Ahafo Ano South Constituency on the final day of his Ashanti Regional tour, the Vice President reminded Ghanaians of former President Mahama’s vehement opposition against the Free SHS policy of the Akufo-Addo government.
He noted that Mr. Mahama had been extremely opposed to expanding Free SHS access to underprivileged homes, especially the millions of children from homes that are incapable to bear the huge cost of paying their children’s tuition fees among other necessities that they now enjoy from the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration which is focused on providing quality education to all and sundry.
"We promised the people of Ghana we would implement Free SHS if we won..When we said that, the former President said we were lying. He said it was 419. He said if he had 2 billion, he won't invest it on Free SHS. He said it was not possible and I said it is possible."
Dr. Bawumia stressed the Free SHS has been very impactful, stating “we came and implemented it and it has been 8 years of Free SHS. In this period, 5.7 million of our children have benefited from Free SHS".
''If we had listened to former President Mahama, there wouldn’t have been Free SHS and all these children would not have benefitted from Free SHS.”
''When Mahama was President, he could not even provide chalk to schools. Today, we are providing computers to both students and teachers from Kindergarten to SHS.”
