Why Parliaments September 3 Sitting Wont Be Held In The Chamber
Fri, 09 Aug 2024 09:00
The Speaker of Parliament has announced that the parliamentary sitting scheduled for September 3, 2024, will not take place in the usual chamber.
This decision follows a request by the Majority side to recall Parliament, originally submitted on July 31, 2024, after the House was adjourned sine die on July 30, 2024.
In a statement, the Speaker explained that the adjournment had been planned weeks in advance to allow for the retrofitting of the Parliamentary Chamber in preparation for the 9th Parliament.
This renovation is focused on addressing structural defects and upgrading audio-visual equipment to prevent future disruptions and ensure the Chamber’s readiness for upcoming sessions.
Due to the ongoing renovation, the chamber will be unavailable for the scheduled sitting on September 3.
The Speaker also noted that while the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) was considered an alternative venue, its current condition was deemed unsuitable for hosting a parliamentary session.
This has created a practical test in identifying a suitable location for the meeting within the stipulated timeframe.
To address this issue, the Speaker announced that Parliament would still meet on September 3, 2024, but at a venue that will be determined and communicated as soon as possible.
